Feast of Alexander Crummell, Holy Eucharist, Sept. 11, 2022
Crummell, Alexander (1819-1898)
African American Episcopal missionary to Liberia

Alexander Crummell was a pioneering African-American priest, academic and African nationalist, born to a free black woman and a former slave in New York. He traveled to England to lecture on American slavery in the late 1840s, and abolistionists helped fund his studies at Cambridge University. He moved to Libaria in 1853, where lived and worked for 20 years, providing education for people in the country.

He began serving at St. Mary's Episcopal Mission in Washington, D.C. after he returned to the U.S. in 1872, and he helped found the first independent independent black Episcopal church in D.C.

From the Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions
"Crummell influenced Liberian intellectual and religious life as preacher, prophet, social analyst, and educationalist, proclaiming a special place for Africa, with its God-given moral and religious potential, in the history of redemption."
