The Lazarus Society
A Renaissance
I wonder how many of you, as you start to read this, are wondering what is the Lazarus Society at St. Paul’s? That was certainly the question I had when I was asked to get involved a few months back.
The answer, quite simply, is a group formed by Vestry to manage our Columbarium. The society has existed for many years, but we are going through something of a renaissance at the moment, applying more resources and getting more folks involved to ensure that our Columbarium is managed respectfully and effectively, in full compliance with state legal requirements.
Currently those serving the society are:
• Barb Anderson – Clerk
• Douglas Colmery
• Steve Johnson – Chair
• Karen Merrin Swope
• Beth Paynter
• Father Phil
Much gratitude is owed to Tom Lilly and to our dearly departed Judy Arrington for their historical knowledge brought to our early meetings.
The society met several times over the summer to review relevant documentation, historical records, application forms, terms and conditions of use. This paperwork has now been revised. We did leave the cost unchanged. In fact, this is still the same as when the Columbarium was first established more than 30 years ago.
Our Columbarium is comprised of two sections, known as the East Columbarium and the South Columbarium. They are located by the baptismal font on the east and south walls respectively. The East Columbarium has very few open niches remaining. The South Columbarium still has many available.
If you already have a niche assigned, or a loved one inurned, we will be contacting you during the fall. We will review the new paperwork and make sure that your records, and ours, are accurate and up to date.
If you do not have a niche reserved but are interested to find out more, please contact Peggy in the office for a packet of information. If you are interested in getting involved with the society, please contact any of the current members and we would be happy to discuss further this opportunity.
Respectfully submitted.
